Briefly about Macau Airport

Macau International Airport is a fast growing regional airport and host to an increasing number of budget carriers, including Viva Macau Airlines. It is situated at the eastern end of Taipa Island and neighboring waters, is the only airport in Macau, which opened for commercial operations in November 1995. Since then the airport has been a common transfer point for people traveling between mainland China and Taiwan, as well as a passenger hub for destinations in China and Southeast Asia. The airport doesn’t currently have any services to the US or Europe, but it does have good connections to Thailand, Taiwan, China and other regional destinations. If you plan on flying in the region, the flights from here can be cheaper than from Hong Kong. During 2006, the airport handled 5 million passengers and 220,000 tones of cargo. Macau International Airport is the true city airport, just a few minutes away from the newest, biggest and most spectacular tourism, entertainment and MICE facilities in Asia. Macau Airport is set on reclaimed land next to Taipa Island, making for a twenty minute ride to central Macau. There are a number of local buses serving Macau central and the Chinese border gate. You’ll also find bonded ferries to Hong Kong, which allows you to skip Macau immigration, and direct buses to China. Renting a car in Macau airport is also available. The airport’s runway was built on a strip of reclaimed land in the sea, adjacent to Taipa Island, where the main terminal and air traffic control facilities are located. The runway is connected to the apron by two causeways. The airport’s designed capacity is 6,000,000 passengers per year, with processing capacity of up to 2,000 passengers per hour. While it’s expanding, the airport remains small, and you’ll find few of the services and luxuries found at Hong Kong’s award winning airport.
